CAI Northern Essex WIC program offers Mother-to-Mother Breastfeeding Peer Counseling which provides the following:

Before the Baby is Born…

  • Individual Breastfeeding Care – While pregnant and after your baby is born WIC participants meet with a breastfeeding specialist. This is a good opportunity to talk with an expert who can answer questions and give advice.
  • Prenatal Infant Feeding Classes – These classes provide an opportunity to talk about infant feeding choices and get answers before the baby is born. Classes help Moms know what to expect when breastfeeding is started, and is a great way to meet other moms who are going through the same things.
  • Education Materials – WIC has materials to answer questions that most women commonly ask about breastfeeding.

When the Baby Arrives...

  • Breastfeeding Peer Counselors – WIC Peer Counselors are moms who have breastfed their babies. They are trained to help other moms. Bi-lingual (Spanish) Peer Counselor availability. They are available to help anytime, 24 hours/day and can even talk with moms in the hospital.
  • Breastfeeding Support Groups – WIC helps new moms to learn from each other in a group setting, with assistance from trained peer counselors.
  • Help with getting Pumps – WIC will help moms get a pump through their health insurance plan or WIC’s lending program. A peer counselor can also help moms make a plan for pumping when going back to work or school.
  • Extra WIC Food for Nursing Moms – To help moms stay strong and healthy while nursing, moms receive extra WIC foods, for up to a year after the baby is born.
  • Infant Nutrition information – WIC Nutritionists can help moms choose the best foods for their babies and the whole family.
