The Community Action, Inc. (CAI) Adult Learning Center is committed to helping you to learn English, obtain your High School Equivalency (HSE), identify a career pathway and find your way to a brighter future.

HSE & ESOL programs are funded by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Upcoming Registration Dates

Please arrive on time (10 a.m. for HISET Preparation and ESOL registration sessions and 6 p.m. for English for Work registration sessions). Late arrivals will not be admitted.

 

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes.

Learn English to:

  • Communicate with your boss, your children, your doctor..
  • Prepare for college or job training

All ESOL classes run 2-3 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Class days depend on your class placement.

Intensive 12 Weeks of Evening English (ESOL) Classes - Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 6–9 p.m. Designed for High Intermediate-Advanced Level ESOL Students and free of charge.

  • Improve English reading and writing skills
  • Learn to communicate better at work
  • Create a job-winning resume
  • Learn to interview in English
  • Explore career interests
  • Prepare for college or job training
  • Develop strategies to meet your goals

High School Equivalency Test (HSE) preparation classes are offered to prepare you to take and pass the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). All HSE Prep classes run 3–4 days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Class days depend on your class placement.

The Distance Learning High School Equivalency (HSE) Test Preparation course is offered for self-motivated students who are not able to attend regular class days. This course prepares you to take and pass the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET). Students will have access to a DL coach that will set them up with the program and will guide them through the process. Students can then study online anywhere and at any time of the day. 

Program Requirements

  • Regular access to a computer with internet
  • Attend an on-site 3-day orientation
  • Maintain contact with the DL Coach
  • Devote at least 5 hours a week to the course

Eligibility, service area and income guidelines

The CAI Adult Learning Center serves the following Massachusetts cities and towns: Amesbury, Bradford, Haverhill, Lawrence, Methuen, Newburyport and Salisbury.

  • There are no income requirements to register. 
  • Participants must be at least 16 years of age and officially withdrawn from school.
