WIC Overview for Health Care Providers

Healthcare providers are very influential in helping their patients make decisions about their health. A WIC referral from you can make a difference. WIC appreciates the support received from clinicians and is always open to ways to improve collaboration with you! To download medical referral form and other WIC materials go to www.mass.gov/wic.

What does WIC have to do with me as a healthcare provider/clinician?
WIC can give patients nutrition counseling and free nutritious foods at critical periods of growth and development. WIC counts on clinicians to provide medical information on women and children at risk and to help eligible people know about WIC services.

What does WIC provide?

  • Nutrition counseling
  • Breastfeeding counseling
  • Free nutritious foods, worth about $46 a month
  • Immunization screening and referrals for children
  • Social service and health referrals

WIC serves:

  • Pregnant women
  • Breastfeeding women, up to one year postpartum
  • Non-breastfeeding women, up to six months postpartum
  • Children under 5 years old
  • WIC is for all kinds of families: Fathers, mothers, grandparents, foster parents or other legal guardians of a child under 5 can apply

Does WIC work?

  • WIC participation significantly improved hemoglobin and hematocrit values among pregnant women
  • Prenatal WIC participation reduced the rate of low birth weight by 25%, and of very low birth weight by 44%
  • WIC participation by 30 weeks gestation was associated with significant reductions in infant mortality during the first 28 days in four out of five states studied
  • Children enrolled in WIC had significantly lower rates of anemia at follow-up visits than at pre-enrollment visits

How can I help my patients receive WIC benefits?

  • Request WIC materials for display
  • Make it routine. Please put a WIC brochure in every new-patient packet
  • Tell your patients that WIC is a health and nutrition program and encourage them to call a local WIC program or 1-800-WIC-1007
  • Give your patients a complete Medical Referral Form. This helps WIC identify the medical or nutritional risk factor(s) needed for enrollment
  • Display WIC posters and brochures in your office in the languages your patients speak
